Còn có tên gọi khác là thủy tinh hữu cơ, nhựa acrylic hay thủy tinh acrylic. Nó là một loại nhựa nhiệt dẻo trong suốt thường được sử dụng ở dạng tấm và miếng như một vật liệu nhẹ, không thể phá vỡ, có thể được sử dụng thay thế cho thủy tinh và thủy tinh (do đó có tên thủy tinh hữu cơ).

Trong ngành công nghiệp mỹ phẩm, Polymethyl Methacrylate thường được sử dụng trong các sản phẩm trang điểm với vai trò là chất độn, chất tạo màu, chất tẩy da hoặc chất làm đầy nếp nhăn vì kích thước phân tử lớn của nó.

Hiện chưa có báo cáo chính thức nào về tác dụng phụ có hại của Polymethyl Methacrylate đối với làn da và sức khỏe của người sử dụng bên ngoài. Tuy nhiên, các chuyên gia cho rằng những hạt này có khả năng gây hại cho môi trường và ảnh hưởng gián tiếp đến sức khỏe con người trong tương lai.

Cụ thể, các hạt nhựa này không thể tự phân hủy, nếu các hãng mỹ phẩm sử dụng càng nhiều sẽ thải ra môi trường làm gia tăng quá trình tích tụ trong thủy sinh vật và nhiều loại cá biển, nguồn thức ăn của con người. Đặc biệt, một số hạt vi nhựa từ tính sẽ giữ lại thuốc trừ sâu và các chất độc khác, ảnh hưởng đến môi trường.

Do đó, các nhà khoa học cảnh báo, nếu tiếp tục sử dụng hạt vi nhựa, quá trình tích tụ trong nước và cá sẽ tăng lên, dẫn đến nhiều chất độc tích tụ trong cá, từ đó gây ra vấn đề ảnh hưởng đến sức khỏe. Sức khỏe con người có khả năng xảy ra trong tương lai.
